The second method is to check Free disk space from the System category and click the Clean icon. The first is to click the top left Options menu, select Wipe Free Space and choose a folder on the drive. There are two ways to wipe free space using BleachBit. This way, even if these files (with random data) can be recovered, they don't offer any clues about what was on your hard drive, or what you have used to erase this data (e.g. BleachBit is a free and well-known utility for cleaning junk files from your computer. These temporary files are only used as a way to completely get rid of previously deleted data.

They contain random characters and that is not sensitive information. NOTE: Even if you miss to erase these wip files manually, there is no danger of sensitive information being recovered from them. Then simply select them and use the SHIFT + DEL key combination to delete them. You should find as many wip files there as many files got erased. One way of making sure that your data is not recoverable is to simply overwrite all the free space with random data. Go to Computer and click on the letter of the drive from which the files were erased from (it's usually Local Disk (C:) and look for files with the extension. When you delete a file from the recycle bin in Windows, rather than deleting the actual file, the space the file is occupying is simply marked as free so that another file can come and use those blocks on your hard drive.

To locate them in Windows Explorer is very easy. If the process is somehow interrupted, the WIP files will not be deleted and you will need to remove them manually. To solve the issue all you need to do is to start east-tec Eraser, let it finish the erasing process and the temporary files (created by Eraser) will be deleted.

When wiping the unused disk space (the free space) on a drive or scrambling the deleted files and folders properties, east-tec Eraser creates a series of temporary files (.WIP files) in the root folder and fills the space there until there is no free space left on the drive.

But even then, certain portions of the data could be recoverable, depending on the manufacturer’s definition of “factory reset,” or how the given version of Android handles resetting.Īll of this is to say, there is unfortunately no single guaranteed fool-proof way to permanently wipe your Android device, but DiskDigger’s “Wipe free space” function goes a long way if used properly.I lost my free space after running east-tec Eraser. Of course the best way to make sure the data on your device is no longer recoverable is to perform a factory reset of the device, and then use DiskDigger to wipe the free space. This is partially my fault for not sufficiently clarifying how to use the feature most effectively, and partially Android’s fault for making its storage and security system exceedingly complex. However, some users have been reporting that the wipe feature doesn’t seem to be working properly: certain bits of data still seem to be recoverable even after wiping free space.
